Letter to the Muslim Council of Britain
from:Neil Winton

I would welcome your reaction to a story now appearing on my website (see front page of - www.wintonsworld.com <http://www.wintonsworld.com > ) which calls for the modernisation of Islam in Britain, and is based on a book „The Trouble With Islam‰ by Irshad Manji.

The story makes the point that there are many aspects of unreformed Islam that are likely to clash with Britain's traditions and culture. Muslim organisations often demand the British display sensitivity to them, but wouldn't it make more sense for Muslims in Britain to display sensitivity to British ways, rather than the other way around?

Shouldn't British Muslims dump some of the outdated, counterproductive almost medieval doctrines which hold them back economically and politically? Isn't it likely that the vast, silent majority of British Muslims do that anyway and live their lives in a "British" way, while the organisations which purport to speak in their name are out of touch, and are merely stoking up resentment?

I would appreciate your comments, at your convenience.

Regards
Neil
