The controversy over the choice of vice-presidential candidates has always been a non-issue. The media whips up tensions while the campaign for President of the United State sits in pre-convention limbo because there’s nothing much else to write about. Nobody in the history of the United States ever voted for a president because they liked the running mate. The idea that you can somehow “balance the ticket” by adding someone who cancels out regional negatives or adds some missing political qualifications, has always been nonsense.

Maybe, just maybe, this time things are different.

The selection of political hack Senator Joe Biden, the motor-mouth senator who has spent a long career being wrong on just about everything, and who plagiarised some nonsense from former Labour Party leader the Welsh windbag Neil Kinnock himself, doesn’t change anything. The Democrat’s Senator Barack Obama is still the defeatist, tax and spend lover of abortion who hates free trade because his union paymasters tell him too. If he is inexperienced in foreign affairs, we should pay attention to who he appoints as Secretary of State, not the candidate for Veep.

But the nomination of Governor Sarah Palin could be a game-changer, and not only because Republican challenger John McCain is so old, the odds of his VP taking over the presidential reins are much greater than usual. Palin not only electrified the party base at the Republican Party convention with her no-nonsense people-friendly conservatism (David Cameron please note; fat chance). She set off a reaction which should tell us all we need to know about the moral corruptness, the sheer nastiness of Democrats (and the Labour Party; Democrats are Labour socialists in disguise).

Revolting to behold
The snobbishness, the vitriol poured on to Palin mostly by left-wing women, who hate the thought that there are people out there who are super-smart movers and shakers, but who reject the left-wing garbage which they swear by, was revolting to behold.

How dare Sister Palin be a successful woman who thinks that abortion is evil. How dare she find that she is pregnant with a Downs Syndrome baby, and refuse an abortion. How dare she say to her pregnant daughter that she should not have an abortion, but marry the cad that did it. How dare she say that the theory of evolution is just that, a theory, not proven scientific fact, and that the theory of intelligent design should be taught in schools too. (Note that much of the media calls her a creationist, but the belief that God was responsible for creating the world is a simple, basic belief for anyone who is religious. Her only link to “creationism” is that she had the temerity to insist that this theory was taught in schools) How dare she point out that the idea that humans are warming the climate is another unproven theory. No doubt she also believes that we don’t know enough to be able to change whatever direction the climate is moving in today. How dare she be beautiful and articulate, and have views rejected by the pointy heads on the East Coast and the America-haters in Hollywood.

Liz Forgan
Typical of this sneering, intolerant coterie was Liz Forgan, one-time Managing Director of BBC Radio 4, and now right-on great and good leftie. On last Friday’s BBC Radio 4’s Any Questions, she couldn’t wait to try and mock Palin as some kind of out-of-her-depth Podunk just put up by McCain as a token women. Governor of Alaska? That didn’t count. We are familiar with this attitude among our own socialist women. Margaret Thatcher suffered this abuse too, but she had the last laugh, as I hope Sarah Palin does too when she and McCain romp home to victory in November.
