WintonsWorld is dedicated to the truth about cars, and if I’ve got the time, some home truths about politics too. I worked for Reuters, the international news agency, for 33 years, where my last job was European Auto Correspondent. I was also Reuters' global Science and Technology Correspondent, and worked as an editor and reporter in Brussels, New York, London and Toronto. Because of Reuters’ stringent rules about separating opinion from fact I was never able to let loose and actually say what I thought about the latest Robin Reliable or Morris Canardly. There’s no stopping me now. I judge cars on their honesty, practicality, quality and value for money, not on their nought to sixty times, or whether they induce over-steer at the limit, whatever that is. I don’t rely on advertising so I can say what I think without the taint of commercial pressure. I will be paying particular attention to economy. From my road test data over the last few years, I’ve found that most manufacturers overstate average fuel consumption by about 25%, some by up to a shocking 35 per cent. This is part of a cosy arrangement where all the car companies use the same methods of testing fuel consumption on a test-bed in a laboratory. This has the advantage of making all the data perfectly comparable. Unfortunately, it also means that the figures have absolutely no relation to on-the-road performance. Neil Winton |
