Dear Sir,
Climate Scaremongers Will Ruin Us, And Not Solve The “Problem”
I see that Shoreham MP Tim Loughton has joined the group of politicians trying to frighten us into submission with scare stories about climate change (MP: Climate change is one of our greatest challenges-WSG Nov 22).
In the 1990s I was global Science and Technology Correspondent for Reuters, the international news agency, and one of my tasks was to research articles on climate change. I asked the question: “Is the climate changing and if so, are humans causing it”. As a regular consumer of BBC news and British newspapers, I had assumed that the link was firm and proven. After speaking to the world’s top climate scientists in America, Germany, Britain and Australia, to my amazement I discovered that there was no such proven link. Not only that, I found that climate naturally changed all the time. In the Roman period the weather here on the south coast was so warm, red wine was a big industry.
Since the 90s I have kept tabs on the science of human induced global warming, and the above is still true. There are plenty of “scientists” not qualified as climate specialists saying that human activity, mainly CO2 emissions, is altering our climate, but the ones in the know, like Professor Richard Lindzen of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, say there is no link.
Politicians of the left were the first to jump on the climate change band wagon, seeing an opportunity to order us about, save us from ourselves, and curb our freedom to travel by plane and car. It is most disappointing to see Conservatives like Mr Loughton climbing aboard this vehicle designed to impose government power on us.
“Simply put, we can’t ‘adapt’ to much more climate change: we simply have to stop it,” says Mr Loughton.
That’s nonsense, Mr Loughton. We don’t have the knowledge or the power to change the climate. If we listen to the likes of Mr Loughton we will destroy our economy and impoverish ourselves, taking measures which will have no impact on the climate at all.
There is one thing that we can all agree on though.
We must not squander scarce resources like oil and gas irresponsibly. We must treat natural resources with respect, and bear in mind that there are generations to come who won't be happy if they are left some kind of scorched earth. That means investing in technology, like the recently announced nuclear fusion reactor, which will eventually provide us with clean and limitless fuel.
Meanwhile, don’t be cowed by scare merchants like Mr Loughton.
Yours sincerely
Neil Winton
