Jaguar has unveiled its new XK two-seater sports car which will make its debut at Frankfurt Car Show in September and go on sale early in 2006.

The XK builds on the aluminium construction introduced in the big XJ saloon. The aluminium monocoque body is 31 per cent stiffer than the previous XK and offers a 10 per cent improvement in power to weight ratio. The all-new XK is up to 180kg lighter than key rivals, with a kerb weight of just 1595kg.

Powered by a 4.2-litre V8 engine developing 300bhp, the XK races to 60mph from standstill in 5.9 seconds less than half a second off the pace of the previous 400bhp supercharged model.

A convertible will also be available later.

The XK’s six-speed transmission introduces a new generation of automatic gearshift for Jaguar, replacing the familiar ‘J’ gate with the new Jaguar Sequential Shift system.

The XK has a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System and run-flat tyres.
